A firmware update is quite important for a smartphone. It improves the performance, brings new features and rectifies bugs in the phone software. A new phone model is more prone to software bugs which gets rectified as new firmwares come out. For example in case of C5 many users are reporting reboot issues. The latest firmware update available for Nokia C5 is v31.022, and it seems that there is a need of newer firmware to resolve this issue.

You should keep on checking for new available firmware for Nokia C5. To check the current firmware version of your phone dial*#0000#.

To update Nokia C5 firmware, download and install Nokia software updater or Nokia Ovi Suite application in your PC.Now connect your phone in PC suite mode. When you will run the Nokia software updater program it will look for available updates for your model. If a newer firmware is available backup you data and upgrade the firmware by following the instructions.

I’ll update on this blog as soon as a new C5 firmware comes out. For the time being the latest firmware is v31.022

Here comes the most important Nokia C5 Secret Codes -

*#06# – This code let’s you know the IMEI (International Manufacturer Equimpent Identity) number of your device. Each phone has a unique IMEI number which differentiates one device from other.

*#0000# – This shows the current firmware version of your phone software. This way you can assure whether you have the latest firmware version or not.

*#7370# – This is one of the most important secret code as it let’s you hard reset your phone.
*#7870# – If you just wish to bring the phone software back to original settings, use this code. It’ll only soft reset your phone. The default lock code is 12345.

If C5 is your first Symbian 3rd Edition smartphone you may not be aware of the signing process for installing applications. The earlier version of Symbian i.e S60 2nd Edition was prone to virus attacks so Nokia introduced a signing process as security measure, but it gets cumbersome as you have to sign every unsigned application in order to install it, otherwise you’ll get this error “Certificate Error Contact the application supplier”.To get rid of this process you need to hack you phone.Hacking doesn’t harm at all but improves the functionality of your smartphone. There are 2 great and useful applications for hacking S60v3 phones namely Helloox2 and Drakkarious, but unfortunately C5 is not supported yet. As soon as C5 will be supported by Helloox2 I’ll update it here.

But there is an alternate way out for hacking C5 which is little bit lengthy but easy to follow.

1. First you have to download Navifirm PC application to download Nokia C5 firmware files. Run the application and choose “Nokia C5 (RM-645)” under “Products” column as shown in the screenshot above.
Then select “31.22″ under second column “Releases”. In the next step you have to choose your proper C5 version based on Country/Carrier and Color. For example, C5 T-Mobile UK Warm Grey. In the last column it will show you the firmware files for your specific version. Select all and download the files somewhere in your PC.

2. Now Download and install latest version of Phoenix in your PC. After installation you need to transfer the firmware files in this folder C:/Program Files/Nokia/Phoenix/Products/RM-645.

3. Now follow this video for further steps. It is for Nokia N97 but you can follow the same for Nokia C5. You’ll need Nokia C5 modded firmware which can be downloaded from here.

Have you got any of these two Errors while installing an application on your Nokia C5?

1. “Certificate Error Contact the application supplier”
2. “Expired Certificate”

The first error means that the application you are trying to install is unsigned and you need to sign it first for proper installation. Nokia has introduced this feature in Symbian S60 3rd edition /5th edition smartphones for better security. There are 2 ways to get past with this error, either you need to hack your device or sign the application.

The second error means that the application is signed but expired. Once you sign an application it remains valid for 6 months after that you have to resign it. Changing the phone date to 1 year back can solve this problem.

In this tutorial I’ll guide you through online signing process with the help of following screenshots -

1. Open this site in your PC web browser – http://cer.opda.cn/en/. Register and Login. Now the first step is to get the developer key (.key) and certificate (.cer) file for your smartphone.

2.For this you need to Apply for certificate by clicking on “Apply cer” as shown above.

3. Fill the application form as shown above. You can get the IMEI number of you Nokia C5 smartphone by dialing *#06#. After submitting the application you need to wait for 24 hours.

4. After 24 hours your .cer and .key file will be generated. Now you are ready to sign an unsigned application. After logging in click on “Signing Softs”.

5. Now as shown in the above screenshot, select your certificate and upload the unsigned application.

6. Your signed application is ready for download. Install and enjoy!

Auto focus works great for closeup mode. Previous few Nokia models were also supplied with the same enhanced fixed focus, and the result was excellent. I don’t think it will be very precise for Macro shots but for normal daily pictures Nokia C5 performs very well.It also has a LED Flash. You can yourself see and the Nokia C5 camera pictures and its comparison with other 3.15 MP shooters.

It means free lifetime walk and drive navigation license. So, Nokia C5 can be your standalone GPS device for traveling. The voice is going to guide you so the small screen size won’t matter.

Earlier this service was quite costly with a fixed monthly subscription. Nokia has adopted a good strategy by making it free.It will help in raising Nokia’s market share in US. The latest budget GPS phone released in US is Nokia 5230 Nuron, which is receiving good response.
There is also the popular Garmin Mobile XT application for S60v3 devices. You can check the Garmin download page. Don’t install the application as of now, C5 is not supported yet.

Nokia C5 is a smart sleek and Good looking cell phone which packs all the essential features of a smartphone at a very affordable price. Being a Symbian smartphone backed up by powerful hardware it offers excellent multitasking and fast operations. Symbian S60v3 platform has huge catalog of 3rd party applications which includes video players,IM clients,Youtube application,Document Viewers and many more. Symbian S60 web browser is a full fledged HTML browser with Flash support. It shows pages in the same manner as a PC web browser, with cursor support for easy navigation. Nokia N-Gage games can also be played on C5 after hacking. Moreover Nokia C5 Symbian UI is the latest, with much improved homescreen and social networking integration.Nokia OVI Maps is a built in GPS application which offers free voice guided navigation for life.

Symbian is not popular in US. They prefer Android and iPhone OS over Symbian.I do have one Android smartphone, Samsung Galaxy Spica i5700.I’m so fed up with the Android platform that I’m gonna ruturn it back.I cannot do so many basic things on Android.
First of all i failed to install any application as i cannot sign in to Android Market. The interenet connection is working fine.I’m able to surf the web but unable to sign in to Android Market. When i searched google i came to know this is a bug and many people are facing this issue.I cannot transfer files over Bluetooth.Simply ridiculous. Then what is bluetooth meant for.Lastly my phone memory is just 150 MB and Android platform doesn’t allow you to install apps on memory card.Believe me I never faced any of these issues with a Symbian Smartphone.
iPhone has even more number of absurd limitations.iPhone lacks Multitasking, Bluetooth File Transfer, No flash in web browser, access from just one PC for iTunes connectivity and many more.
When I’m paying for a hardware i should have the right to use it to full extent without any restrictions.

I’m writing a post specifically on Nokia C5 Processor as its the USP of this budget, compact smartphone. C5 has got the most powerful processor among Nokia smartphones. The upcoming Nokia N8 and the current Flagship, Nokia N900 also share the same ARM 11, 600 Mhz CPU as in C5. So you can understand where does C5 stand in processing power in comparison to these high end smartphones.

If we go through the history of Nokia Symbian smartphones, the very first Nokia S60v1 smartphone 7650 had 104 Mhz CPU.Then came Nokia S60v2 phones which were powered by 220 Mhz CPU.Few Nokia S60v3 phones have Dual ARM 11, 332 Mhz CPU, such as Nokia N95, N82 and N93.These phones have a dedicated 3D Graphics Accelerator. The majority of S60v3 phones have 369 Mhz CPU, the first one being Nokia 5700 . The current Nokia Touch phones such as Nokia 5800 and N97 have 434 Mhz processor.

The latest phones, as i said N900,N8,C5,E5 etc are powered by 600 Mhz processor. Nokia is still far behind the competition as few Android phones have snapdragon 1 Ghz processor whereas a New HTC smartphone is supposed to have 1.3 Ghz CPU. However, for a Symbian smartphone you neither need a Snapdragon processor nor >128MB RAM.In fact, 600 Mhz CPU and 128 MB RAM are more than sufficient.I have myself tested it on Nokia N82 which has the same amount of RAM as C5. I started all the applications installed in the phone still there was no memory problems at all.It gives around 50 MB of free RAM on Boot. And regarding processor users have reported that Nokia phones with 600mhz are very fast, going around menus is seamless, absolutely no lag even with multiple applications running at the same time.
